One Year in the seanwes Community

One year ago, I was working at my old job and trying to make something out of the random illustration and design work I’d occasionally post on my Instagram. I wanted to start my own company, but it seemed like something that was a million years away. Then one evening, November 9th 2014 to be exact, I finally took the plunge, and joined the seanwes Community, and haven’t looked back.

What is the seanwes Community?

The seanwes Community is a place for like-minded people that want to grow their passions into a business and set higher standards for themselves. It’s an online chat and forum where people from all over the world come together to talk about their ideas and help one another succeed. People in the Community care about quality, this isn’t a place to figure out how to make a quick buck, it’s a place to learn how to build something meaningful that will last.

Trying to describe the Community is incredibly difficult. It’s like trying to describe Star Wars to someone who has never seen it. You just need to be here to truly “get it.”

Why did you join the Community?

The main reason I signed up was because of how much I loved the seanwes podcast. I had received so much awesome information from it in the year since I started listening, I had heard so much about the Community in the podcasts, but I was always pretty skeptical. “How great could it really be?” I’d think to myself.

Then one night, I just thought, “what the hell?” and signed up.

I’ve been listening to the podcast since the third episode and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve had so many life changing ideas introduced to me for the first time through the seanwes podcast. It’s made me question some of my previously held beliefs about how a business could be run and my life has gotten so much better as a result.

For those of you who have never heard it, here are my top 3 episodes of the podcast. These are just a few of hundreds of great episodes, but these are the ones that stand out to me as the most influential to changing my mindset.

  1. “There’s No Such Thing As Clients From Hell” – EP011
  2. “The Overlap Technique” – EP052
  3. “Curate What You Share” – EP074

What have you gotten out of the Community?

The Community is a place where you can get your questions answered, you can be held accountable for your goals, and where you can learn and grow just by reading other people’s conversations. So many times I’ve read an exchange between others in the chat that was so similar to a problem I was having myself that it seemed almost magical that I was coming across this advice seemingly by chance.

I’ve made so many new, wonderful friends in the Community that all share the desire to do more and to dream bigger. I feel so invigorated every time I see someone reaching a new level in either their business or in their skill set. It’s a constantly motivating force in my life to keep up with these amazing individuals. I’ve even had the pleasure of meeting some of them in real life earlier this year.

The biggest thing I’ve gotten out of the Community is, just as the name implies, a sense of community and belonging. Everyone there is so encouraging and wants to see me succeed. They call me out when I’m doing something counter-productive to my goals. When I talk about my struggles, people listen and talk me through them.

I can talk about ideas there that I just can’t with many of my friends and colleagues in real life. I can talk about wanting to set higher standards in every aspect of my life and business and not be met with eye rolling or pessimistic remarks. No one calls me “a young idealist not thinking in reality” (something I was actually called once.) In the Community, people tell me I’m not thinking big enough!

How do I compare between last year and now?

When I signed up for the community, I lacked focus on what my goals were. I knew I wanted to start my own company, but I wasn’t really making any positive steps towards making that a reality.

One year later, I’m one month in to being my own boss, I’ve curated what I share online and am starting to pick up more traction, and I have a confidence in myself and my abilities that I’ve never really had before. I owe so much to the wonderful people in the seanwes Community, I’ve received so much support and encouragement that I can never truly repay. Joining was one of the best investments I’ve ever made in myself.

So if you’ve read this long, love letter to an online chatroom and are wondering why Tommy is so passionate about it, start listening to the seanwes podcast. Start soaking in these positive ideas and see how you react to them. If you like what you hear, I strongly recommend you join the Community. You won’t regret it for a second.
