Bottom Floor Brewery is a home brewery founded in 2014 by Ryan Zarichnak in Slippery Rock, PA that prides itself on the care they put in to their craft and the quality of the beers they brew. The name Bottom Floor refers to the basement where all of their brewing (and beer tasting) takes place. Bottom Floor is no small operation, with a love for experimentation with different styles you can find anything from a german gose, to a cucumber wheat, to a chipotle IPA on one of their ten taps.

Bottom Floor Brewery wanted their brand to show that they care more than average home brewers. A hand lettering style was important to communicate a raw, authentic vibe that was important to the founders. The logo needed to convey a professional appearance, but still maintain a down-to-earth attitude that will build excitement about the cool things they are doing. Most importantly, this logo needed to show how much Bottom Floor cares about their beers and what they do. The logo will be used on shirts, growlers, and on promotional materials for home brewing competitions.

Sketches & Concepts

Bottom Floor really prides itself on quality while maintaining their fun attitude and I really wanted the logo to reflect that. A rough hand lettering style was talked about early on and it seemed like the perfect balance between professional and fun that they were looking for. It was important to strike the right balance between rough and raw, and professional and sleek.

The final result was a hand lettered logo that captures the do-it-yourself spirit and attitude that makes Bottom Floor Brewery so special. It’s rough and unrefined, but based on strong typographic rules and elements. Since the name Bottom Floor refers to Ryan’s basement, using a bold, strong typeface for Bottom Floor seemed like a no brainer. Ryan also told me that most people just “head down to the bottom floor because that’s where the fun is,” and I thought that would work well as a friendly and unique tagline. The logo also works in a variety of different sizes and orientations to make sure Bottom Floor Brewery is ready for anything as they grow in to the future!
